Online Gaming 101: Top 3 PS3 Headsets

3 October 2009 12 Comments

One important aspect of online gaming is communication with friends (or strangers) online and therefore it is very important that you get yourself a headset that will optimize your gaming experience. Unlike the Xbox 360 Elite the PS3 does not include a headset so it will be your job to find a headset. We will focus on our top 3 bluetooth headset recommendations available for the PS3 in no particular order.

1. The Jabra bt125

This headset is the one that was packed in with the retail version of Warhawk. No fancy bells and whistles but it does the job. Its dirt cheap too. I managed to score one on ebay for 5$ brand new.

2. The Official PS3 Bluetooth Headset

This headset is the official headset that Sony provides for your online gaming needs. Great features but far more pricier that the Jabra BT125 at roughly 50$ at retail.

3. Turtle Beach P21

This headset is not a bluetooth headset like the two others and to make matters worse it is not even wireless. However, this headset should not be overlooked as unlike the others it allows you to listen to your game in stereo sound while chatting all in one headset. It retails for roughly 70$.

The turtle beach headset isn’t Bluetooth.

Pretty solid article anyway, perhaps you could compare and contrast a couple of the other available headsets designed for gamers.

Kris and Allan, you both bring up good points. I will be sure to keep that in mind for future articles. Thanks for the feedback nevertheless!

I own the official PS3 bluetooth, as well as a few others. The PS3 bluetooth has amazing mic quality and clarity. I use it with my mobile phone over any other bluetooth I’ve tried. Definitely a good buy if you want an all around bluetooth. For just voice in gaming on the PS3, the jabber is fine.

Just use a bluetooth headset laying around somewhere. Doesnt almost everyone have one now. I just use my motorola rockers and they work just fine from my phone to my ps3.

    JQQQ,

actually yes you can use any bluetooth headset, but NOT all of them sound good. out of all the ones i tried i think the official sony headset worked the best.

since i like to hear in game sounds i currently use the tritton axpro 5.1 headphones. aswesome for movies and games.

    chat sounds very clear.

The only headsets that should be suggested for use on PS3 should have a noise cancelling mic. The Jabra headset packed in with Warhawk is a piece of junk and ruins the game experience for others. If I’m in game I don’t want to hear someone elses family or friends having a chat in the background. I definately don’t want to hear game audio from someone elses speakers because they use a cheap mic like the Jabra bt125.

Cheap mics are ruining the PS3 online experience and articles like this suggesting that the Jabra bt125 is an adequate mic are not helping the problem.

If you are thinking of buying a mic for PS3 please do us all a favour and only buy one with a noise cancelling mic.

    RE: trip

Great comment! Noise cancelling really should be promoted, and that Jabra mic is absolute rubbish. Considering just about any blue tooth headset can be used with PS3 I doubt this is the top 3 to start advocating. I don’t think this article has been very well researched. Sorry mate.
